A Young Person’s Guide to Therapy

Starting therapy can feel daunting. I want you to know

that is completely normal and many people feel this way.

Here are some common questions which

I hope will reassure you.

1. What happens in therapy ?

You’ll talk about your feelings and thoughts

in a judgment-free space.

2. What if I don’t know what to say?

That’s okay! I will guide the conversation and help you find

ways to open up and talk about your feelings.

I will not pressurize you to talk

about anything that you don't feel comfortable discussing.

3.Will my therapist judge me?

No, I am not there to judge you, I am there to support

and listen without

judgement but with curiosity .

You don't need to edit yourself in a way that you

may feel you have to in the outside world.

4. How long will therapy last?

The sessions are one hour long,

In terms of how many sessions

It varies for everyone; some people feel just a few sessions

are enough,

others may feel they want more sessions.

5. Can I bring my parent /carer/adult into the session with me ?

I find that sessions are much more effective when it’s just

you and me together.

That said, you’re welcome to invite an adult to

join the beginning of the first session—

or future sessions—if needed.

Understanding Therapy: Frequently Asked Questions for All Ages

What is Therapy?

Therapy is a confidential and supportive space—offered both in person and online—where you can explore your thoughts, emotions, and patterns with a trained professional. It’s a place to gain clarity, build self-awareness, and work toward meaningful change.

How do therapy sessions work?

Whether we meet face-to-face or online, sessions involve open and guided conversation about what’s happening in your life. Together, we explore your experiences, identify patterns, and work toward your goals at a pace that feels comfortable for you

Is online therapy as effective as in-person therapy?

Yes. Both formats offer strong therapeutic benefits. Some people prefer the grounding feeling of meeting in person, while others feel more relaxed and open at home. You’re welcome to choose the option that suits you best, and you can switch between them if needed.

What do I need for an online session?

For online sessions, you’ll just need: A quiet, private space. A stable internet connection. A device with a camera and microphone. If there’s ever a technical issue, we simply reconnect or continue by phone.

What are the benefits of each format?

In-person sessions provide a neutral, contained space that many people find grounding and supportive .Online sessions offer flexibility, accessibility, and comfort—ideal for busy schedules, travel limitations, mobility challenges, or childcare commitments. Both options provide the same level of therapeutic support and confidentiality.

Is everything I say confidential?

Yes. Confidentiality is central to the therapeutic relationship, whether online or in person. The only exceptions relate to safety or legal requirements, which will be clearly explained. Online sessions are delivered through secure, encrypted platforms to protect your privacy.

What if I feel nervous about starting therapy?

Feeling nervous is completely normal.

Most people begin to feel more comfortable after the first session as trust builds and the process becomes familiar.

What if I don’t know what to talk about?

You don’t need to prepare anything. Therapy is a space to explore whatever comes up naturally, and I’ll help guide the conversation so you never feel stuck or unsure.

Can someone join part of my session?

Yes if helpful, a trusted person can join—for support. However, sessions tend to be most effective one-to-one.

Will therapy tell me what to do?

No. Therapy isn’t about giving instructions or solutions. It’s about helping you grow in awareness so you can respond rather than react, make conscious choices, and create meaningful, lasting change.
